About

Hello, world

My name is fingacode — some know me as Junior. I’m a creative coder and artist based in the UK. I’ve been creating & experimenting with digital media since my early teens.

How I got here

Since childhood, I’ve been curious about how things work. That fascination has been a driving force in my life, and it’s what eventually led me to programming. My creative journey started with graphic design, then web development, and I eventually found my way into creative coding.

As a teen, I was obsessed with music! Despite not having the patience to learn an instrument, I knew I wanted to be involved in one way or another, so I started by learning Photoshop to make album art for friends. This evolved into designing T-shirts. I needed to build a website to sell them, so I learned HTML & CSS. Over time I started experimenting with JavaScript, and that’s when I discovered the world of creative coding. I was hooked.

My passion for music has always been my north star, and it’s what has guided me through my creative journey. I applied the little I knew about JavaScript and started experimenting with music visualisers. I was fascinated by the idea of creating something that could respond to music in real time, and I spent countless hours playing with different libraries and techniques.

This experimentation led me into a career as a software engineer, but I’ve always felt like something was missing. I wanted to create something that was truly my own, something that could express my perspective and vision. I was drained by the corporate world, and I wanted to break free from the constraints of traditional software development. That’s when ‘fingacode’ was born — a play on ‘finger food’. I wasn’t interested in perfecting the work; I just wanted a lil taste of what could be. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and I found people who were passionate about the same things, which pushed me further.

The Covid-19 lockdown was a major turning point for me. It gave me the time and space to truly focus on my creative ideas. I got my hands on TouchDesigner, and I was blown away by the possibilities it offered. Around the same time, blockchain art (NFTs) was taking off. Initially, I was mostly creating experimental video artworks made with TouchDesigner, but as I delved deeper into the NFT space, I found a community of creative coders working with generative art, and I felt like I had finally found my place in the world.

I fully committed myself to generative art around 2022 and quit a stable job — lol. Since then, I’ve had my work featured in exhibitions, auctions, and publications worldwide. I’ve also had the opportunity to collaborate with other artists and creatives, which has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

What keeps me experimenting with this medium is never quite knowing what I’ll get. I write the rules, randomness seeds them, and something magical happens — most of the time. I love the process of creating a system that can generate endless possibilities, and I’m constantly inspired by the unexpected outcomes that arise from my work.

That means most of my work is really about building the tool rather than the picture. Every project starts as a new system: colour, geometry, movement, whatever I’m curious about that day. Some of it comes out of where I’m from and where I’ve been, and some of it is just chasing an idea until it works.

The prints

This site is an evolution of my artistic practice, and a way to make my work more accessible. The prints let me share it with a wider audience, and I hope they bring joy and inspiration to those who experience them.

I’m excited to continue exploring the possibilities of generative art and to see where this journey takes me. I hope you enjoy the prints as much as I enjoyed writing the algorithms for them.
